Tiger Barb

Tiger Barb

Puntius tetrazona

The Tiger Barb, scientifically known as Puntius tetrazona, is a small, vibrant freshwater fish popular in the aquarium trade. Native to the slow-moving streams and swamps of Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo, this species is well-known for its striking appearance and active behavior. The Tiger Barb's body is characterized by its distinctive pattern of vertical black stripes resembling a tiger's, set against a shimmering gold or silver background. Adult Tiger Barbs typically reach a size of about 2.5 to 3 inches in length.

Tiger Barbs are social, shoaling fish that thrive in groups, and it is recommended to keep them in schools of at least six to avoid aggressive behavior. They are lively and playful but can sometimes display nippy behavior towards slower-moving tank mates, which makes them unsuitable companions for more delicate species, such as long-finned or slow-swimming fish. In their natural habitat, Tiger Barbs occupy a niche feeding on small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus, but in captivity, they adapt well to a diet comprising flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Known for their hardy nature, Tiger Barbs are adaptable to a range of water conditions, preferring slightly acidic to neutral pH levels and a temperature range of 74 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Their energetic swimming and vibrant presence make them a captivating addition to well-planted aquariums that provide ample swimming space and environmental enrichments.
