Crossbred
A crossbred sulfur-crested cockatoo is a bird reported to have Cacatua galerita ancestry mixed with another cockatoo species or subspecies. The pure species, also spelled sulphur-crested cockatoo, is a large white parrot from Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, recognized by its erectile yellow crest, dark bill, powdery plumage, and far-carrying voice. Hybrids or subspecies crosses may show subtle differences in size, crest shape, eye ring, or facial color, and appearance alone can be misleading.
Care should be planned around the needs of a large cockatoo, not around the crossbred label. These birds need spacious housing, heavy chew material, daily social and training time, bathing opportunities, and a diet that avoids an all-seed pattern. Many enter rescue because noise, dust, destructiveness, and long life were underestimated. Breeding or rehoming decisions should include clear source history, and crossbred birds should not be represented as pure sulfur-crested cockatoos.
