Striped Mud Turtle
Kinosternon baurii
The striped mud turtle is a small egg-laying turtle of the southeastern United States, especially the Atlantic coastal plain and Florida. Adults usually show three pale longitudinal lines on a dark brown oval shell and pale stripes on the head. It uses quiet freshwater and terrestrial shelter, and specialist keepers provide clean shallow water, accessible land, cover and nesting substrate. Kinosternon baurii is distinct from the eastern mud turtle; its shell stripes can fade, so pattern alone is not an absolute identity test.
