Steppe Rat Snake
Elaphe dione
The steppe rat snake is an egg-laying snake of temperate Eurasia, extending from eastern Europe through central and eastern Asia. Its gray or brown body often shows paired dark blotches or longitudinal markings, with a dark eye stripe. Elaphe dione is kept by specialist snake keepers in secure terrestrial accommodation with retreats and a controlled thermal gradient. Some secondary accounts describe live birth, but primary breeding records document eggs. It is distinct from the larger Amur and beauty rat snakes.
