Spectacled Cobra
Naja naja
The spectacled cobra is an egg-laying elapid of the Indian subcontinent. Many adults show the familiar spectacle marking on the expanded hood, but natural color and hood pattern vary, so the mark is not present in every animal. It is maintained by specialist venomous-snake and zoological facilities with secure terrestrial accommodation and professional containment.
Its venom is medically significant, and dangerous-animal permits can apply. Naja naja should not absorb other Asian cobra species formerly grouped under its name.
