Tremarctos ornatus

The Spectacled Bear, scientifically known as Tremarctos ornatus, is the only bear species native to South America and is distinguished by its unique facial markings, which often resemble spectacles, leading to its common name. These markings vary greatly among individuals, with some bears having darker fur and minimal white markings, while others display more prominent spectacles. This medium-sized bear typically inhabits the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains, ranging across countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Adapted to arboreal life, Spectacled Bears are proficient climbers, often foraging in trees for fruit, bark, and vegetation, which comprise the majority of their diet, although they are opportunistic carnivores as well. As a solitary and largely diurnal species, they have a home range that varies greatly based on the availability of food sources. Despite their elusive nature, Spectacled Bears play a crucial role in their ecosystem, particularly in seed dispersal, which aids in maintaining the health of their forest habitats. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as illegal hunting, the Spectacled Bear is considered vulnerable, with concerted conservation efforts needed to ensure its survival.
