Southern River Terrapin
Batagur affinis
The southern river terrapin is a large freshwater and estuarine turtle of Southeast Asia. Adults have a broad smooth shell and an upturned snout, with breeding males developing distinctive head and eye colors. Conservation facilities maintain extensive aquatic space and sandy nesting banks; females lay eggs on land. Batagur affinis was separated from the northern river terrapin, and the older Batagur baska US ESA listing covers it. It is also in CITES Appendix I, requiring careful legal documentation for movement.
