Eastern Copperhead
Agkistrodon contortrix
The copperhead is a live-bearing pit viper of eastern and central North America. It has a copper-colored head and broad chestnut crossbands that narrow across the spine, creating an hourglass pattern. The historical southern copperhead name is included within Agkistrodon contortrix; the broad-banded copperhead is now a separate species.
Specialist venomous-snake collections provide secure terrestrial housing, retreats and a controlled thermal gradient. Its bite is medically significant, and local dangerous-animal permits can apply.
