Southern Banded Knob-Tailed Gecko
Nephrurus wheeleri
The southern banded knob-tailed gecko inhabits rocky and sandy country in Western Australia's Murchison region. Four dark bands cross a pale reddish-brown ground from nape to tail. Its joined neck and shoulder band and dark snout markings separate it from the five-banded Nephrurus cinctus, whose snout usually lacks those marks.
Specialist breeders keep and reproduce it. Ground housing provides sandy substrate, warm and cool shelters and a moister refuge, rather than uniformly damp conditions. It eats small insects, lays eggs and has a short knobbed tail.
