Nasua nasua

The South American Coati, scientifically known as Nasua nasua, is a fascinating and adaptable mammal belonging to the raccoon family (Procyonidae). This species is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, stretching from Colombia and Venezuela down to northern Argentina and Uruguay. Recognizable by their distinctive appearance, South American Coatis have a long, flexible snout, mask-like facial markings, and a bushy tail often carried upright, ringed with alternating dark and light bands.

Coatis are highly social animals, typically found in groups called bands, which can consist of up to 20 individuals, although males are often solitary. These agile creatures are excellent climbers and spend much of their time foraging in trees and on the forest floor. They are omnivorous, with a diet that includes fruits, insects, small vertebrates, and eggs, demonstrating their adaptability to different environments.

Their habitats range from dense forests and shrublands to more open areas like savannas, showcasing their impressive ecological versatility. Coatis play a significant role in their ecosystem, both as seed dispersers and as part of the food chain.
