South American Bushmaster
Lachesis muta
The South American bushmaster is a large forest pit viper of tropical South America. Its strongly keeled tan body carries dark angular blotches, and its tail ends in a pointed tip rather than a rattle. Unlike most vipers, it lays eggs; females may remain coiled around a nest in a burrow. Zoological and specialist venomous-snake facilities provide secure terrestrial space and sheltered retreats. Its venom is medically significant, and possession can require dangerous-animal licensing and professional containment.
