Yellow-Margined Box Turtle
Cuora flavomarginata
The yellow-margined box turtle is a mostly terrestrial turtle of southern China, Taiwan and the southern Japanese islands. Its domed dark shell has a pale central stripe and yellowish margins, and the head bears yellow lines. It is sometimes traded under the name snake-eating turtle, but that name is not a feeding prescription.
Specialist keepers provide moist sheltered ground, shallow water and suitable nesting substrate rather than a wholly aquatic tank. Females lay eggs; documented origin matters for protected native populations. CITES Appendix II has a zero export quota for wild specimens for commercial purposes.
