Siberian Chipmunk
Tamias sibiricus
The Siberian chipmunk, Tamias sibiricus, is a striped ground squirrel native across northern Asia, from forest edges and taiga to rocky scrub and park-like habitats. It has five dark dorsal stripes, cheek pouches for carrying food, and a quick, alert movement style. Although it resembles North American chipmunks, it is a distinct Eurasian species and has established introduced populations in some parts of Europe after pet releases.
Captive Siberian chipmunks need escape-proof housing, digging and climbing opportunities, seasonal awareness, and a diet built around seeds, grains, nuts in moderation, vegetables, and suitable protein. They are active animals rather than cuddly pocket pets, and many dislike frequent handling. Because released animals can affect local ecosystems, responsible ownership includes secure enclosures and compliance with regional rules. Breeders should keep clear source and age records, especially where ownership or sale is restricted.
