Shingleback Lizard
Tiliqua rugosa
The shingleback lizard lives in dry grassland, scrub and open woodland across southern and inland Australia. Heavy overlapping scales give it a pinecone appearance, and its short, blunt tail resembles its broad head. Also called the sleepy lizard or stumpy-tail, it is kept in zoos and private collections.
Captive management provides sheltered ground space and basking opportunities, with food suited to its omnivorous diet of plants and small animals. Females give birth to live young. It is distinct from the smoother, long-tailed blue-tongued skinks.
