Senegal Parrot

Poicephalus senegalus

The Senegal parrot, Poicephalus senegalus, is a compact African parrot with a gray head, green back, and a yellow to orange chest patch that forms a vest-like shape. Native across wooded savannas and open forests of West Africa, it belongs to the Poicephalus group rather than the larger African grey complex. The species has a strong beak, steady climbing style, and a quieter but still expressive voice compared with many larger parrots. Wild birds feed on seeds, fruits, buds, and crops where habitat and farms meet.

As companion birds, Senegal parrots need daily social contact, foraging opportunities, chewable materials, flight or exercise space, and a diet built around quality pellets, vegetables, and measured seed or nut treats. They can bond intensely and may become territorial if handling and routines are inconsistent. Ethical breeders and rescues place strong emphasis on weaning, temperament, age, and source records, since a small parrot can still require decades of care.
