Senegal Bushbaby

Galago senegalensis

The Senegal bushbaby, Galago senegalensis, is a small nocturnal primate from dry woodland, savanna, and scrub habitats across parts of Africa. Also called the lesser bushbaby, it has large forward-facing eyes, mobile ears, dense grayish fur, and powerful hind legs used for quick vertical leaps. Its diet in the wild includes insects, gum, fruit, and small animal prey, with scent marking and calls helping individuals communicate after dark.

Human care is mainly a zoo, sanctuary, research, or specialist wildlife context rather than ordinary pet ownership. Senegal bushbabies require secure climbing space, nocturnal scheduling, careful nutrition, and social management that respects primate behavior. Legal restrictions are common, and hand-reared animals can still be difficult to house humanely. Conservation and education programs usually focus on habitat, natural feeding behavior, and avoiding the trade in unsuitable exotic pets.
