Scorpion Mud Turtle
Kinosternon scorpioides
The scorpion mud turtle is an egg-laying freshwater turtle of Central and South America. Its oval brown hard shell often carries three low keels, while the hinged lower shell can close around the tucked head and limbs. It uses quiet waters and damp terrestrial shelter, with appearance varying among regional subspecies.
Specialist turtle keepers provide clean shallow water, accessible land and sheltered resting places. It is an omnivorous mud turtle; its common name does not mean that scorpions are a required captive diet.
