Sandfish Skink
Scincus scincus
The sandfish skink inhabits sandy deserts of North Africa and southwestern Asia. Its glossy scales, wedge-shaped snout, short limbs and fringed toes help it move beneath loose sand, giving it a swimming appearance. It is kept in specialist collections, and captive egg-laying and hatching have been reported.
A sand-based enclosure must allow burrowing and provide controlled warm and cooler areas; much of its activity occurs below the surface. It feeds mainly on small invertebrates. Despite older conflicting accounts, this species lays eggs.
