Sand Monitor
Varanus gouldii
The sand monitor, also called Gould's goanna, inhabits open woodland, grassland and sandy country in Australia. It has a long neck, strong digging claws, pale spots or bands and a dark eye stripe bordered with lighter color. Zoo breeding and long-term captive keeping are documented.
This active monitor needs substantial ground space, digging opportunities and suitable basking sites with cooler refuges. It eats animal prey and lays eggs. Varanus flavirufus is treated as a synonym, not a separate species. CITES Appendix II regulates international trade.
