Sand Lizard
Lacerta agilis
The sand lizard inhabits sunny heath, dunes, grassland and other open habitats across much of Europe and into Asia. Males often develop vivid green sides in the breeding season; the back carries rows of dark patches and pale-centered spots. Zoos breed it for conservation and reintroduction.
Managed housing provides sandy or soil substrate, plants, logs and basking sites, with protected shelters and species-appropriate seasonal conditions. It eats small invertebrates and lays eggs. Wild capture and keeping are regulated in parts of its range.
