Saker X Gyrfalcon Hybrid
Falco cherrug x Falco rusticolus
The saker x gyrfalcon hybrid is a captive-bred falconry bird produced by crossing a saker falcon, Falco cherrug, with a gyrfalcon, Falco rusticolus. It is not a wild species or a stable breed, so appearance and performance vary with the parents and the direction of the cross. Many are large, strong falcons with the gyrfalcon's size and acceleration tempered by the saker's tolerance of warmer, more open-country conditions. Plumage may be gray, brown, pale, or heavily marked, and females are usually much larger than males, as in other falcons.
These hybrids belong in experienced falconry or breeding programs under the same sort of strict permitting applied to large raptors. Secure housing, daily conditioning, telemetry, careful weight control, and whole-prey feeding are normal parts of management. Escapes are taken seriously because hybrid falcons can survive, hunt, and potentially complicate conservation work if they enter areas used by wild saker or gyrfalcon populations. Reputable breeders identify birds with rings or microchips and keep clear parentage records so a buyer knows exactly what cross is being handled.
