Unknown Variety
An unknown variety sailfin molly is a sailfin molly whose strain, color form, or fin type was not recorded. Poecilia latipinna is a livebearing fish native to warm coastal waters, marshes, ditches, and estuaries, where it often encounters mineral-rich or mildly brackish conditions. In the aquarium trade, sailfin mollies appear in many colors and patterns, but an unknown variety may simply be a mixed domestic fish or one entered without a more specific description.
Care should follow the species rather than the variety name. These mollies need clean, hard, alkaline water, steady warmth, and a diet that includes algae, spirulina, and other plant material along with balanced prepared foods. Males use the tall dorsal fin in courtship, so enough swimming room and several females per male help reduce pressure on individual fish. If the fish is being bought for breeding, ask whether the seller knows the parent stock; otherwise, offspring color and fin shape should be treated as unpredictable.
