Unclassified Variety
An unclassified variety sailfin molly is a Poecilia latipinna that has not been sorted into a named aquarium color or fin form. It may be a wild-type silver fish, a variable domestic molly, or a fish with markings that do not fit a neat label such as dalmatian, marble, gold, black, or lyretail. True sailfin mollies are identified less by color than by body shape and, in mature males, the enlarged sail-like dorsal fin.
For keepers, the unclassified label mainly means that appearance and breeding outcomes are uncertain. Healthy sailfin mollies need space to swim and display, stable hard water, vegetable-rich food, and low stress from overcrowding or poor sex ratios. Commercial mollies are sometimes influenced by related species through past hybridization, so anyone maintaining pure Poecilia latipinna lines should document sources carefully. In ordinary aquariums, these fish are active livebearers that do best in groups with compatible, non-nipping tankmates.
