Mixed Variety
A mixed variety sailfin molly is a Poecilia latipinna with color, fin, or pattern ancestry from more than one aquarium strain. The wild sailfin molly comes from warm coastal fresh and brackish waters of the southeastern United States and nearby Gulf regions. Males carry the species' signature tall dorsal fin, which they raise in display, while females are larger and plainer. Aquarium lines may include black, gold, dalmatian, marble, orange, silver, white, yellow, or lyretail traits.
Mixed-variety fish are common in community tanks and livebearer breeding, especially where different molly colors are housed together. They should be expected to produce variable offspring rather than a stable strain. Sailfin mollies usually fare best in hard, alkaline water with warm temperatures and good filtration; many tolerate or benefit from slightly brackish conditions, although tankmates must be chosen accordingly. They graze on algae and plant matter, give birth to live young, and can overpopulate small aquariums if sexes are not managed.
