Roughneck Monitor
Varanus rudicollis
The roughneck monitor lives in humid forests of mainland Southeast Asia and western Indonesia. Its name refers to the enlarged, pointed scales on the back of the neck; adults are dark brown to black, often with paler markings. It appears in specialist collections and climbs as well as foraging on the ground. Captive housing must accommodate its adult size and climbing behavior, with substantial cover and access to suitable basking sites. Females lay eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
