Rough-Scaled Python
Morelia carinata
The rough-scaled python is an egg-laying python with a restricted range in coastal northwestern Western Australia. Its strongly keeled scales, brown blotched body and relatively long teeth distinguish it from smooth-scaled Australian pythons. It uses rocky and wooded country and is maintained by specialist python collections. Housing needs secure retreats, sturdy climbing structures and a controlled thermal gradient. Morelia carinata is a distinct species, not a rough-textured color form of a carpet python.
