Rough-Scaled Plated Lizard
Broadleysaurus major
The rough-scaled plated lizard lives in rocky savanna and other habitats in central and eastern Africa. Heavy rectangular scales, a lateral fold and a long tail give it an armored appearance. Also called the Sudan plated lizard, it is maintained in zoos and reptile collections.
Ground-oriented housing provides secure shelter, basking opportunities and space to move and dig; its varied diet includes insects and plant foods. Females lay eggs in sheltered sites. It is Broadleysaurus major, formerly Gerrhosaurus major.
