Unknown Strain
An unknown strain rohu is a Labeo rohita whose hatchery line, river origin, or selective breeding background has not been recorded. Rohu is a South Asian major carp widely raised across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and neighboring regions. It is a deep-bodied, silver to gray freshwater fish with a rounded snout and often reddish fins, valued for fast growth and table quality in warm ponds.
In aquaculture, an unknown strain should be treated as production stock of uncertain genetic background rather than as a named improved line. Farmers and hatcheries usually judge such fish by source reliability, size uniformity, health, growth, and survival in local water conditions. Keeping purchase records, avoiding accidental mixing with broodstock programs, and checking for disease or deformities are more useful than relying on color labels. Rohu do best in warm, well-oxygenated ponds and are commonly managed in polyculture with other carps.
