Roan Antelope

Hippotragus equinus

The roan antelope, Hippotragus equinus, is a large African antelope of open woodland, savanna, and tall grass near reliable water. It has a horse-like build, a roan gray to reddish-brown coat, a short mane, tufted ears, and a bold black-and-white facial mask. Both sexes carry thick, backward-curving horns, which makes adult handling and social introductions serious work. Roan live in herds led by females, while mature males hold territories or bachelor positions depending on season and population density.

Zoos, reserves, and some African game ranches manage roan antelope for display, conservation value, and carefully regulated hunting or breeding programs. They require large paddocks with shade, strong fencing, low-stress capture systems, and enough space for animals to avoid each other during disputes. Diets are based on grass, hay, browse, and mineral supplementation rather than rich concentrates. In the wild, local declines are linked to habitat change, competition with livestock, disease exposure, and poaching, so reserve planning often focuses on grassland management, water access, and maintaining viable herd structure.
