Unknown Breed
An unknown breed ringneck dove is a domestic Streptopelia risoria whose variety, line, or color background has not been identified. The bird may be called a Barbary dove, ringed turtle dove, or ringneck dove, and it may still show any of the common domestic colors, from normal blond with a dark collar to cream, ivory, orange, peach, pied, pearled, rosy, pink, or albino. In this species, unknown breed usually means missing breeding information, not that the bird is wild or unsuitable as a pet.
Shelters, rescues, and casual keepers often use the unknown label when a dove arrives without records. Care should be based on the individual: a roomy cage or aviary, social companionship, clean seed mix or pellets, water, calcium access, and protection from cats, cold drafts, and escape. Ringneck doves breed easily, so two birds housed together may need nest control if chicks are not wanted. Unknown-line birds should be sold or rehomed simply as ringneck doves unless their color genetics can be verified.
