Lesser
Lesser rhea is commonly used for Darwin's rhea, the smaller rhea group from southern South America and Andean regions. It is not a domestic breed of greater rhea, even when listed under a broad rhea category. Compared with greater rheas, lesser rheas are generally smaller, more associated with open scrub or highland habitats depending on population, and important to identify correctly in collection planning.
Zoos, wildlife parks, and conservation collections should treat the lesser rhea label as a taxonomic and husbandry note, not a casual size description. Accurate identification affects enclosure climate, breeding records, transfers, and education signage. These birds need secure runs, room to move, appropriate diet, and careful management during breeding season when males may defend nests. Where birds come from rescue or older private collections, staff should verify origin as far as possible before pairing or moving them.
