Mixed Strain
Mixed strain redclaw crayfish are Cherax quadricarinatus descended from more than one captive, farm, or color line. The species is a warm-water freshwater crayfish native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea, widely used in aquaculture and aquaria. Adult males develop the soft red patch on the outer claw that gives redclaw its common name, while body color can range from brown and olive to blue, green, orange, or pale selected forms.
In ponds, tanks, and recirculating systems, mixed strain stock is often valued for availability and general vigor, but performance depends heavily on water quality and husbandry. Redclaw need warm stable water, dissolved oxygen, shelter for molting, and enough space to reduce cannibalism. Farms often grade animals by size and separate breeders to improve growth or uniformity. Because this crayfish can establish outside its native range, transport and ownership may be restricted, and unwanted animals should never be released into waterways.
