Unknown Strain
An unknown strain red wiggler earthworm is Eisenia fetida stock whose original culture, selection history, or supplier line is not known. Red wigglers are the standard worms of many vermicomposting systems because they live near the surface, tolerate crowding, and convert decaying organic matter into castings quickly. They are typically red, pinkish, or brown with pale banding, but appearance changes with age, diet, and bedding, so it rarely proves strain identity.
Unknown-strain worms are usually acceptable for backyard bins, classroom projects, and small worm farms if the animals are vigorous and correctly identified to species. Start them in moist carbon bedding, add food gradually, and watch for heat, ammonia, mites, or anaerobic odor, all of which indicate the bin is out of balance. For research, commercial breeding claims, or regional biosecurity, unknown stock is a drawback. Keep cultures contained and avoid using surplus worms as casual garden releases where they may affect leaf-litter ecosystems.
