Mixed Breed

Mixed breed red-shouldered macaw usually refers to a captive bird whose ancestry is not assigned to a single recognized subspecies or breeding line rather than to a formal breed. Diopsittaca nobilis, often sold as a Hahn's macaw in the pet trade, is the smallest macaw: a compact green parrot with a long tail, bare pale facial skin, a red shoulder patch, and quick, active behavior. In mixed-line birds, size, head shape, and intensity of the shoulder color may vary slightly, while normal green remains the expected appearance.

Care decisions should be based on the species, not the mixed label. These macaws need daily flight or exercise, destructible toys, social time, and a diet built around formulated pellets, vegetables, limited fruit, and safe nuts or seeds. Pairing decisions matter for keepers who document subspecies, because mixed ancestry should not be represented as pure subspecies stock. Buyers should ask for hatch records, band or microchip details, and health testing where available, especially because a young green mini-macaw can be difficult to identify confidently.
