Red-Crowned Roofed Turtle
Batagur kachuga
The red-crowned roofed turtle is a large freshwater turtle of the Ganges drainage in South Asia. Breeding males develop vivid red and other bright head colors, while females are larger and less colorful; the shell has a raised central roof. It is maintained by conservation and zoological programs with extensive aquatic space and sandy nesting banks. Females lay eggs on land. CITES Appendix I restricts international trade, making documented legal origin and specialist conservation management essential.
