Unknown Strain
An unknown strain rainbow trout is a rainbow trout whose source line or parentage is not known to the seller, keeper, or receiving facility. In Oncorhynchus mykiss, strain names can reflect hatchery origin, selection program, spawning season, or regional stock, so an unknown label leaves those details open. The fish may be outwardly indistinguishable from any other rainbow trout, and color alone is not a reliable clue to its background.
Unknown-strain fish are best managed as general production or display trout rather than as broodstock for a defined program. They need the same cold, clean, oxygen-rich water and steady feed management as other rainbows, with quarantine and health screening before mixing with existing fish. Hatcheries, farms, and pond owners should avoid representing offspring as a specific strain unless records can support it, and releases should follow local fisheries rules because undocumented trout can complicate wild-stock management.
