Rainbow Lorikeet

Trichoglossus moluccanus

The rainbow lorikeet name has been used for a bright nectar-feeding parrot complex in Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, with Trichoglossus haematodus retained in many broad or older treatments. Many modern lists separate Australian rainbow lorikeets from other forms once grouped under that name. These parrots have green wings, a blue head, orange to red breast tones, and a brush-tipped tongue adapted for gathering nectar and pollen from flowering trees.

In aviaries and homes, rainbow lorikeets require a routine quite different from seed-eating parrots. Prepared nectar, soft foods, and suitable produce must be offered fresh, and housing needs frequent cleaning because sugary food spoils quickly and droppings are loose. They are active, social, loud birds that need flight space, bathing, and durable enrichment. Breeders should identify the form or locality they keep where possible, since casual mixing can blur regional differences within this complex.
