Puff Adder
Bitis arietans
The puff adder is a heavy-bodied live-bearing viper widespread across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Adults have strongly keeled scales, a broad triangular head and dark chevron-like markings on a brown or yellowish ground. It is maintained by specialist venomous-snake and zoological collections with secure terrestrial enclosures, cover and a controlled thermal gradient.
Its venom can cause severe injury and death, so professional containment and dangerous-animal licensing may be required. Natural regional colors vary considerably.
