Prairie Rattlesnake
Crotalus viridis
The prairie rattlesnake is a live-bearing pit viper of western North America, extending from southwestern Canada into northern Mexico. It has a keeled olive-tan body with dark dorsal blotches, a broad head with facial stripes and a segmented rattle. Specialist venomous-snake and zoological collections provide secure terrestrial accommodation with retreats and an appropriate thermal gradient.
Its venom is medically significant, and dangerous-animal permits may apply. Western rattlesnake names used before species splits can be ambiguous.
