Prairie Kingsnake
Lampropeltis calligaster
The prairie kingsnake is a nonvenomous, egg-laying snake of central and southeastern North America. Its gray, tan or brown ground carries dark rounded dorsal blotches and smaller side spots, rather than the bright bands of many other kingsnakes. It is established in specialist snake collections.
Secure terrestrial housing provides hides, room to move and a controlled thermal gradient. Its identity should be recorded as Lampropeltis calligaster, distinct from the eastern mole kingsnake and other formerly grouped taxa.
