Pond Slider
Trachemys scripta
The pond slider is the species Trachemys scripta, native to southeastern North America and widely introduced elsewhere. Red-eared sliders and yellow-bellied sliders are named subspecies within it; red-eared and yellow-bellied sliders also have their own entries.
Adults have an oval hard shell and striped head and limbs, with head patches varying by subspecies. Captive housing needs generous clean swimming water, dry basking space and nesting land. Females lay eggs. Local invasive-species and sale restrictions can apply.
