Astrochelys yniphora
The ploughshare tortoise is a highly threatened tortoise of northwestern Madagascar, centered on the Baly Bay region. Adults have a high golden-brown shell with dark scute seams and a projecting gular plate beneath the throat. It is maintained through specialist conservation and breeding programs rather than routine pet keeping.
Secure land enclosures provide sheltered retreats and nesting ground; females lay eggs. The species is listed under the US ESA and CITES Appendix I, with strict movement and trade controls.
