Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus
The platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a small livebearing freshwater fish from Mexico and Central America, long established in the aquarium trade under names such as southern platyfish and moonfish. Wild-type fish are modest in color, but domestic strains have been selected into red, gold, blue, wagtail, tuxedo, calico, and high-fin forms. Platies are close relatives of swordtails, and aquarium lines may show the influence of related Xiphophorus species depending on their breeding history.
In home aquariums, platies are usually kept as active community fish that do best in clean, moderately hard water with stable temperature and regular plant cover. Because females give birth to free-swimming fry, a small group can quickly become a breeding colony unless sexes are separated or fry survival is managed. Buyers should choose fish with full bodies, steady swimming, and no clamped fins, since weak mass-produced lines can be prone to stress. Breeders often track color strain, fin type, and parentage to keep lines recognizable rather than letting every generation become a mixed livebearer blend.
