Mixed Breed

Mixed breed pin-tailed parrotfinch is a practical record term for birds that do not belong to a single known captive line. In this species, breed is not used in the same way it is for domestic chickens or dogs; most named differences in aviculture are color mutations, family lines, or occasionally crosses involving other Erythrura finches. A mixed bird may look like a normal green pin-tailed parrotfinch, or it may show blue, lutino, pied, or intermediate markings that point to varied ancestry.

Pet keepers can house mixed-line birds successfully if they meet the species' needs for a warm, settled aviary and low-stress companionship. The label matters most when breeding. Pairings between mixed birds can produce unpredictable color results, and offspring should not be represented as a clean mutation line unless the background is documented. Rescues and hobby sellers should pass along any known parentage, hatch dates, and health history, even when the exact line is unclear.

Colors: Blue, Green, Lutino, Pied
