Pig-Nosed Turtle
Carettochelys insculpta
The pig-nosed turtle is a distinctive freshwater turtle of southern New Guinea and northern Australia. Its soft leathery shell, fleshy piglike snout and paddle-shaped forelimbs distinguish it from ordinary pond turtles, but it is not a marine sea turtle. Large public aquariums and specialist collections provide extensive clean swimming water and suitable nesting banks. Females lay eggs on land. International trade is regulated by CITES, and native wildlife rules make documented legal origin especially important.
