Philippine Sailfin Lizard
Hydrosaurus pustulatus
The Philippine sailfin lizard inhabits humid forests beside waterways in the Philippines. Males have a tall sail on the tail base and a low crest along the back, and strong limbs and compressed toes support climbing and swimming. It is maintained and bred in zoos and specialist collections.
Housing combines a substantial clean-water pool with dry basking places, sturdy climbing logs, UVB, humidity and visual shelter; its diet includes plant and animal foods. Females lay eggs in soil near water. Its large size and active habits require considerable space.
