Perentie
Varanus giganteus
The perentie is Australia's largest living monitor, inhabiting arid inland rock country. Its powerful body, pale eye-like spots and long neck and tail make it an imposing predator. It is displayed and bred in zoological collections. Its size and activity require substantial secure housing, sturdy shelter and a broad choice of temperatures, including warm basking sites and cooler retreats.
It hunts and scavenges animal foods. Females lay eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II; it is a specialist animal with considerable space demands.
