Pemba Green Pigeon
Treron pembaensis
Although it sometimes appears beside domestic pigeon names, the Pemba green pigeon is best understood as a wild island pigeon, not a breed of the rock pigeon. The name refers to Treron pembaensis, a green pigeon endemic to Pemba Island off the coast of Tanzania. Like other Treron pigeons, it is adapted to feeding in trees, with green and yellow-olive plumage that blends into foliage and a diet centered on fruit rather than grain. It is associated with forest, wooded farmland, plantations with mature trees, and other canopy habitats where fruit is available.
Human involvement is mainly conservation, field research, and habitat stewardship. Surveys, protection of remaining forest patches, and retention of native fruiting trees matter more than private breeding. Where green pigeons are held by licensed facilities, they need warm, quiet aviaries and specialist frugivore diets, not standard domestic pigeon management. For landowners and conservation teams on Pemba, reducing hunting pressure and keeping connected tree cover can support local populations while allowing the birds to move between seasonal food sources.
