Painted Wood Turtle
Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima
The painted wood turtle is a mostly terrestrial turtle of Mexico and Central America, found in woodland and other humid habitats near water. Shell pattern varies among subspecies, with red and yellow markings especially conspicuous in ornate captive stock. Specialist turtle keepers provide moist sheltered ground, a shallow water area and a controlled basking space rather than a wholly aquatic tank.
Females bury their eggs in substrate. Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima manni is a subspecies within this species, not a separate species.
