Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain Pacific abalone is a Haliotis discus hannai that has not been assigned to a named hatchery line, selective-breeding family, or geographic strain. The label may be used for farm stock, research animals, or market juveniles when the shellfish are clearly Pacific abalone but their breeding background is not being specified. Shell color is often mottled green-brown, though growth stage, diet, and environment can influence appearance.
For farmers and researchers, an unclassified strain should be treated as unknown genetic stock unless records can be recovered. The animals still need cool, clean, well-oxygenated seawater, stable salinity, gentle handling, and appropriate algal or formulated feed. Keeping source notes is useful even when the strain name is missing, because abalone programs may compare growth, disease tolerance, and survival between lines. Conservation or enhancement projects should avoid using unclassified stock where local lineage protection is a goal.
